Living Values: An Educational Program

Original developed & written by Diane Tillman and Dianna Hsu

A Facilitator Guide to Help Parents and Caregivers Teach Values

DIANE TILLMAN is a licensed educational psychologist and marriage and family therapist who travels internationally to conduct Living Values training and lecture on personal development. She worked with thousands of parents during her twenty-three years with a public school system in California. She is currently LVEP's International Coordinator for Content.

As a child’s first and perhaps most important teacher, parents impart lifelong values to their children from the beginning. This Living Values guide offers a comprehensive program to help parents and caregivers encourage and develop social and emotional skills in children. Designed to be used in conjunction with the age-appropriate Living Values Activity book, this guide uses experiential methods to teach the values of Peace, Respect, Love, Tolerance, Honesty, Humility, Co-operation, Happiness, Responsibility, Simplicity, Freedom and Unity. This guide offers both a process and the content for parent group facilitators. It includes:

  • A six-step process to explore different values, including participants' reflections on their heritage, discussing how they "live" and teach their own values.
  • Exercises that teach activities to children through songs, reflections, stories and social interaction.Living Values
  • At-home suggestions to encourage the development of twelve key core values that involve everything from establishing Peace Corners to developing positive attitudes.
  • A parenting skills section to deal with common parental issues, ranging from the importance of play, when and how to listen, encouragement, thinking before saying "no" (and then sticking to it) and conflict resolution.

Parent groups are a cost-effective method of providing both quality education and support to parents and caregivers. In gaining greater awareness of their own values and behaviour and developing their parenting skills, parents help children reach their potential as positive, creative, responsible beings who contribute to a better world.

Book is 17 x 23cm
